Poached Breakfast Cafe
Poached Breakfast Cafe can be found right in the heart of the island, in Chalong. You really shouldn’t even be thinking the word latte whilst in Phuket without thinking immediately of Poached. We are obsessive about coffee and are always looking for new ways to improve and refine our process.
We choose the finest beans from Phuket Coffee Lab who get suuuuper scientific about how they roast their beans, the exact temperature, storage and even when they roast them. Once they get to us, we start by ‘degassing’ the beans for the perfect amount of time to ensure the carbon dioxide is released properly, and the bitter flavour that goes along with it. Then, we store the beans at the perfect temperature only for a limited amount of time because the flavour of the coffee changes over time dependent on storage. Coffee is a real science, right? And we have got the science of the best latte in Phuket down pat.
Then, our skilled baristas grind these perfect beans and press them, applying the perfect pressure for the coffee to trickle through and pick up all the amazing notes of flavour that makes our coffee out of this world. Then, we heat and foam the milk to create the most amazing creamy consistency.
What makes our lattes special are 2 things: the smooth depth of the flavour and the foam. Seriously, you never think about how important the foam is until you have a latte like ours. It’s thick, it’s creamy, it’s airy yet heavy – words don’t do it justice so you’ll probably just have to pop down and try it! Is it the best latte in Phuket? Uhh HECK YEAH!
And what pairs well with a latte? Our scrummy Melbourne inspired menu, obviouslyyyy! We’ve got some wonderful salads, especially our Caesar salad and Cobb salad. Or if salad isn’t your thing, try our classic smashed avo on toast with perfectly creamy, poached eggs. My personal favourite is our banana bread – soft, buttery with unbelievable flavour. Seriously, it seems like such a simple dish but it’s soooo moreish.
We’ve got burgers, waffles, French toast, some super duper sangas (sandwiches), and amazing brekky options like our breakfast burrito or fresh fruit chia pudding. Whatever floats your boat, suits your boots or hams your sandwich (not a real phrase but I think I could have invented something here), we’ve got it! Ketho Coffee and Kitchen
Ketho Coffee and Kitchen is this vibey little glass hut in central Kathu. It’s got a great outdoor seating area covered with plants and has this beautiful natural feel to it all. Even the walk to the toilet is through this gorgeous little tropical garden, it’s stunning. We’re here today to talk about lattes and I want to give their latte a solid 8/10.
They use good quality beans and there is good flavour to the coffee. It could be a little smoother if I’m honest but it’s definitely pretty good. What really stands out here is their honey and lemon black coffee topped with a sprig of rosemary. It’s delicious and refreshing and the rosemary provides beautiful depth and balance to the flavour.
They have a great selection of pastries you can choose from as well as a western style menu. Or, they also own a dim sum store right next door so you can always grab some dim sum and then pop over to grab a coffee and rest your food baby. Not the best latte in Phuket but it’s definitely a good latte and this place is one of our favourite cafes for vibes and service. It’s great if you’re in the area!
Campus Coffee Roasters
Campus Coffee Roasters is a crowdpleaser if the crowd were made up entirely of coffee snobs with wide brimmed hats and faux glasses. Hipster jokes aside, this place has killer coffee. They roast their own beans on site and offer several methods of coffee brewing including traditional, cold brew and pour overs. They specialise in darker roast coffee beans so expect a rich, deep, full flavour. We prefer ours a little smoother a la Poached but this one is great for lovers of dark roast coffee.
Their caramel macchiatos and latte both score an 8.5/10 on our scale. Great flavour, decent foam but creaminess could be improved.
A word to the wise, this cafe is located in a busy spot in Phuket Town and tends to be one of the busier cafes. Famous for it’s high quality coffee and cool vintage atmosphere, its frequented by students and digital nomads. You might want to get there earlier in the day to score a better seat.
Coffee Talk Old Phuket Town
You can recognise the storefront of Coffee Talk by the giant old school car out the front. Decorated with vintage paraphernalia from the 1920s including old radios, fans, filming equipment and more, this place lets old school rule! With comfortable leather armchairs and moody decor, this is a great place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of Phuket Town.
The coffee here is fantastic, their latte scores a 9/10 on our scale. The downside here? The food. They offer western style food but it’s not as high quality as many of the other places mentioned in this article.
So, if it’s just coffee you’re after, this is a great spot to try and one real contender for the best latte in Phuket.
